Pondering 1st Grade......In just a few short weeks, kindergarten will be a memory, and first grade will be a reality. How do you know if your child will be ready?
First grade is the launching pad for reading. Students take the letter and sound knowledge they have diligently been learning in kindergarten, and apply it daily to everything they are doing. The goal is "automaticity." Automaticity is the when the use of information becomes automatic, meaning that a student does not have to stumble over information, but rather can use knowledge with ease. To create automaticity, practice. Practice makes skills permanent. Taking the time to write daily, and read daily will insure first grade success. Making reading and writing a daily habit is the answer to automaticity. The websites noted below are excellent resources for now, and for the summer. Just a few minutes a day can reinforce learning, and can prevent the "summer slide" (that means loosing the academics over summer.) http://www.scholastic.com/magicschoolbus/ http://www.coolmath.com/ http://www.storyjumper.com/ http://www.starfall.com/ http://www.abcya.com/ |
The Padded Room ReturnsThe link below is a very extensive list of apps I retrieved from a digital kindergarten website. If you have a bit of time, and patience, troll through the app list, and you are bound to find a match for your child. This list is icon based, and apps are not limited to kindergarten skills, but include early primary resources as well. You cannot directly connect to the app store, since this resource originated in Europe, however you can search the app store and find most titles, I did.
Great resource page for the end of the year: http://applist.me/YXGhDV |
